For a decade before Wildfire Today Founder and wildland firefighting stalwart Bill Gabbert’s death, he wrote numerous articles on what he called the “Holy Grail of wildland firefighting safety.” … A company claimed to Wildfire Today that it is closer to making this quest a reality. RoGO Communications, which focuses on developing safety technology for firefighters and first responders, was recently awarded a NASA Small Business Innovation Research contract to develop its “DropBlock 2.0.”

The hope is that companies like RoGO will use that data to solve society’s biggest problems. …the technology allows for a faster, better and safer response to wildland fires … better able to predict where the fire is going, how fast it is going to get there and who might be in possible danger.

The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management tested this technology in 2023. … “We implemented it with 13 of our hand crews,” said Tiffany Davila, the agency’s public affairs officer. … Davila says this is another very important tool in their toolbox that could save lives.

This fire season, the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management will be testing new satellite-based crew locating and communication devices called DropBlocks. These will provide for increased crew accountability and safety during an incident where there may be little to no cell phone or radio service.
